The FIA recognized the electric hypercar’s 503.17 km/h single-direction run. Supplier BLT’s earlier disclosure explains how metal additive manufacturing contributed to the body structure.

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme reached 503.17 km/h (312.66 mph) on November 1 on the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed International Road in Abu Dhabi. Marc Basseng drove the electric hypercar past its previous 496.22 km/h benchmark, set in Germany in September 2025. The FIA recognized the new result. BYD says the run earned two Guinness World Records, for a production car and an electric production car, both in the single-direction category.

The additive manufacturing story begins with the car’s structure. At EuroCarBody 2025, BYD presented an integrated body structure developed with Bright Laser Technologies (BLT). The supplier says metal 3D printing gave the design team more freedom to integrate structural features. For a low-volume performance car, that freedom can be useful where loads pass through parts that must fit into tight spaces.

The two disclosures answer different questions. The FIA confirms the speed reached on the road. BLT describes how additive manufacturing contributed to development of the vehicle structure. The published speed results do not quantify how much the printed structure contributed to the increase from 496.22 to 503.17 km/h.

For manufacturing teams, the question is whether the same design and production approach can deliver consistent structural properties across multiple builds. Part-level mass, fatigue results and inspection data would help show where the printed structures offer an advantage over conventional assemblies.
