Maeda Giken uses 3D printing and eco-material TABWD® to create wall decor for Toyota Auto Body's headquarters.

Maeda Giken, which operates the interior brand "FūūBi" utilizing 3D printers to propose advanced spatial designs, has recently completed wall decorations for a conference room in Toyota Auto Body's main office building. The project combined the environmentally conscious material "TABWD®" with 3D printing technology.
TABWD® is a uniquely developed material that blends cypress thinned wood with plastic. It features a wooden texture while offering high molding flexibility. "FūūBi" products have frequently incorporated TABWD® in the past, allowing the accumulation of expertise based on actual results—such as optimizing molding conditions for the material's properties and addressing warping. This project fully leveraged that experience, realizing complex shapes difficult to achieve with conventional mold-based manufacturing through the design freedom unique to 3D printing.
In the production process, the speed and flexibility of 3D printing played a significant role—enabling the presentation of multiple trial models within just one week after the initial meeting. Despite the relatively large quantity of approximately 250 units, production was completed within one month, demonstrating the established capability for high-quality, short-turnaround manufacturing.
The project leads, Toshiki Iyoda and Taihei Yoshimura, commented:"In this project, we were able to produce several trial models within a week from the initial meeting until the scheduled visit, which truly showcased the speed advantage of 3D printing. Since we have been using TABWD® for some time, the basic molding conditions were already established, allowing us to focus on adjustments for warping based on the shape and dedicating time to improving molding quality from multiple perspectives. Even with about 250 units—a relatively large quantity for 3D printing—completing production in one month will serve as valuable experience for future projects."
