When a 3D Printer Becomes a Chocolate Vending Machine: Turning "Purchase" into a Show

At this year's CES, a U.S. company transformed the process of buying chocolate into a cool tech performance. The startup Sweet Robo introduced "ChocoPrint™," which is essentially an automatic vending machine with a built-in food-grade 3D printer. Customers can select heart shapes, text, or even custom logos, and then watch as the machine deposits liquid chocolate layer by layer, "printing" a personalized dessert in real time.

More Than a Vending Machine: It's an Experience

Sweet Robo is no newcomer. Its entertainment-focused robotic vending machines are already deployed in over 1,300 locations across 25 countries and have entered several major theme parks. Its core philosophy is to use technology to create novel experiences without increasing labor, thereby boosting average spending and customer satisfaction. ChocoPrint takes this idea to a new level—it sells not just chocolate, but a surprising and engaging process of waiting and watching.

The Technical Challenges Behind the Sweetness

Applying 3D printing to real-time food production presents challenges far more complex than those of ordinary vending machines: print speed, material flow control, strict hygiene standards... all testing the system's reliability. Sweet Robo is leveraging its accumulated expertise in robotics here, striving to balance consistent output with visual appeal.
Currently, this "entertainment-driven retail" model is seen as promising for applications like brand pop-up stores, tourist landmarks, and major exhibition venues. It may signal a future trend: as products themselves become increasingly similar, creating unique memories during the "moment of purchase" will become key to winning over consumers.
