The color-changing roast duck was once the hottest “spokesduck” in the photochromic filament community.

Many makers turned it into car hanging ornaments, and it looked pretty cool when the colors shifted in sunlight.
But when summer hits and the car sits under the blazing sun, trouble follows – the duck literally goes limp from the heat. The culprit is the material: PLA-based photochromic filament has a heat deflection temperature of only about 55°C. In a parked car, that threshold is easily exceeded, and the ornament can turn into abstract art within minutes.
Now, Chinese brand eSUN has rolled out a new option: PETG photochromic material.
It retains the signature UV-triggered color-shifting effect – the color changes on exposure to light – and the playfulness is fully preserved, but the heat resistance has been significantly boosted. With this filament, the roast duck can withstand direct sunlight in a car as a basic feature, and it also holds up well in wet or outdoor environments.

This material isn't just tougher – its real value lies in creating a true “dialogue” between the environment and the object: colors change as light changes, responding swiftly and naturally. For designer toys, cultural creative products, or collectibles, it adds an extra layer of dynamic detail. For car decorations or outdoor gear, it's much more reliable than PLA. And for wearable fashion or functional indicators, the color-changing effect opens up fresh creative possibilities.
PETG itself is easy to work with – it's not finicky to print, and you don't need to tweak settings drastically when switching filaments. Even casual users can get started without a hitch.
In short, with PETG photochromic, the roast duck remains the same duck, and the color change remains the same magic – it's just grown up and no longer fears the sun.
