China’s Zhejiang Provincial Museum recently did something pretty cool: when restoring ancient ceramics, it no longer aims for an “antique-style, seamless” repair.

Instead, it uses transparent resin 3D printing to fill in missing areas, so original historical marks and later restoration can be told apart at a glance. Like negative space in traditional Chinese painting, the damage is no longer hidden; instead, it gains a kind of dignity.
Traditional restoration often uses plaster, clay, or opaque resin, which can easily cover old traces. The restoration team took a different approach: first, 3D scanning to capture ceramic fractures, patterns, and wear details without contact; then digital modeling based on similar objects; then printing replacement pieces with high-transparency V1 resin on a Raise3D DF2+ DLP printer; and finally post-processing and bonding.
The key lies in precision and transparency. DLP produces less distortion than LCD, so transparent parts can fit tightly against the broken edges of ancient ceramics. The high-transparency resin resists yellowing and is easy to post-process with clear coat. After bonding, it has a crystal-like quality: it completes the shape without stealing the spotlight from the artifact itself. Here, the DF2+ takes on the job of forming high-precision transparent parts, making dissimilar-material joining more reliable.
This approach is not only for display cases. China’s Zhejiang Provincial Museum has also used it to develop cultural-creative replicas. With the same transparent resin fusion process, it turns “museum-grade” restoration aesthetics into souvenirs people can take home.
Technology has not made decisions for history; it simply makes restoration more honest. It also lets viewers see that restoration is not about erasing damage, but about letting the past and present be present at the same time.
