Fabulous has launched a new SLS powder material, PA11 DETECT, specifically designed for food contact applications. It can be processed on standard SLS systems such as the Formlabs Fuse 1+.

This bio-based polyamide 11 powder meets both EU food contact material requirements and FDA guidelines, solving a long-standing certification challenge in additive manufacturing.
In automated food production lines, plastic components such as grippers, star wheels, and sensor holders are often non-standard custom parts. Traditional mold-based production involves long lead times and high costs. PA11 DETECT enables rapid changeover production—parts can be designed and manufactured in a short time without molds, significantly shortening adaptation cycles and reducing spare parts inventory costs.
The material itself offers excellent impact strength, chemical resistance, and fatigue performance, making it suitable for continuous factory operations. More critically, it features detectability: additives in the blue material can be identified by X-ray inspection, ensuring that even if breakage occurs, fragments can be detected and prevented from entering food production processes.
This characteristic opens new possibilities for digital spare parts strategies in smart factories: component data stored in the cloud, parts printed locally on demand—safeguarding food safety while reducing equipment downtime. The material retains its certification after post-processing with AMT systems, balancing surface quality and functional requirements. This represents a significant breakthrough in food-grade 3D printing applications.
