Consumer-Grade Metal 3D Printing Finally Hits the Desktop!

Desktop metal 3D printing finally feels truly consumer-grade.

Tanxue Technology’s SnowPod has been unveiled—a desktop machine that uses SLM (selective laser melting) technology, with a very direct goal: bring industrial-grade metal printing onto a personal workbench.

The whole machine measures 360×360×660 mm, smaller than some flagship FDM (fused deposition modeling) printers, and supports ER316L stainless steel. A 40 μm laser spot paired with 3 μm Z-axis precision can clearly resolve fine contours, narrow gaps, and microstructures. A finer spot also reduces thermal load, allowing the machine to be lighter and more compact. The build volume is 80×80×100 mm—enough for parts, jewelry, tools, and prototypes, without consuming an unreasonable amount of powder.

Powder safety, one of the biggest headaches in metal printing, is handled with a closed system: powder storage, printing, transfer, recovery, and filtration in one integrated flow. PM2.5, gas, temperature, and humidity are monitored in real time; the chamber door and filtration system are interlocked, and the door only opens when air quality meets the standard. It comes with the NitroPod nitrogen generator, which produces nitrogen on demand and eliminates the need for nitrogen cylinders.

Support removal has been considered too. The easy-removal structure lets supports break away step by step like a zipper, reducing cutting and grinding. SnowPath software is free, handles automatic slicing and toolpath planning, and starts printing with one click; a built-in AI camera watches from the first layer to the end and can warn about warping or material shortage. Powder recovery reaches over 90%, and powder cartridges can be swapped with a twist.

SnowPod will launch on Kickstarter for crowdfunding in Q4 this year. People in China can also take part, with shipping to China available. It targets individual creators, engineers, designers, small hardware teams, and research and education users. Desktop metal printing is starting to become everyday.
