Digital manufacturing leader triples down on Axtra3D system, expanding set up to three units in the space of 18 months to meet customer demand
Axtra3D, a company specializing in Hi-Speed SLA systems, has installed a third Lumia X1 printer at Protolabs as the digital manufacturing leader expands its advanced photopolymer production capabilities. The move underlines how integral the Lumia X1 has become to Protolabs’ AM workflow, and makes them the first customer to have purchased three of the 3D printers.
In a bid to meet increasing demand, Protolabs has grown its fleet of Lumia X1 Hi-Speed SLA systems in just 18 months. It added a second Lumia X1 last summer, and now supports four fully optimized Axtra material solutions as part of its advanced photopolymers for 3D printing portfolio.
The solutions, which include tough engineering and ESD materials from Loctite, flame-retardant solutions from Arkema, and ceramic solutions from Forward AM, leverage the Hi-Speed SLA technology’s high throughput, precision, surface quality, and part fidelity.
“From the very beginning, the Lumia X1 has delivered strong throughput, reliability, and overall performance, giving us a solid foundation to scale our photopolymer offerings,” stated Kenny Capps, Director of 3D Printing Operations at Protolabs.
“Its consistent production of high-quality parts with minimal post-processing has enabled us to expand our capabilities and meet growing customer demand across a broader range of advanced applications.”
The quick scaling of the set-up positions Protolabs to rapidly adopt and deploy new advanced photopolymers and application-specific solutions within the Axtra3D ecosystem, all in an already-validated production environment.
“Protolabs’ decision to install a third Lumia X1 reinforces both the depth of our partnership and the differentiated performance of Hi-Speed SLA,” said Rajeev Kulkarni, Chief Strategy Officer at Axtra3D.
“Protolabs consistently identifies and scales transformative manufacturing platforms. Their continued investment in Lumia X1 validates our ability to combine speed, precision, and a production-grade material ecosystem with fully validated solutions. Scaling to multiple systems demonstrates that HiSpeed SLA is no longer just a technology platform, but an industrialized production solution.
“This enables predictable output, validated processes, and consistent performance across machines, materials, and applications. These are essential requirements for enterprise manufacturing and allow customers to move confidently into true serial production. We’re proud to support Protolabs’ continued growth and innovation.”
Axtra3D reported a strong 2025, as a focus on production-grade applications and customer-centric innovation contributed to progress across revenue, global channel expansion, and customer retention in the first half of the year.
