The large-scale prop was made by Haddy through Disney's accelerator program

Haddy, which specializes in AI-powered robotic 3D printing and runs what it calls the world’s largest 3D printing factory, seemed like the ideal partner to create props and design structures for Disney’s amusement parks. This is now coming to fruition, as Disneyland is preparing to integrate a 3D printed boat prop in its famous Jungle Cruise ride.
The riverboat ride is among the most famous amusements at Disney’s theme parks, having been unveiled at the park’s opening 70 years ago. Naturally, the old-school ride has undergone updates over the decades and its newest change comes in the form of a 3D printed canoe. According to CNET, the 3D printed boat is designed to float and spans 20 feet in length. By using 3D printing in the creation of the functional prop, Haddy enabled Disney to reduce production times and labor substantially. According to Haddy, a traditionally made boat could take weeks and even months to produce, while the company’s robotic 3D printing solution can make it in 70 hours.
The large-scale 3D printed prop was presented in November at Disney Demo Day along with a number of other 3D printed products made by Haddy. These included a series of custom Mickey Mouse light fixtures and a plastic 3D printed gate made to convincingly look like wrought iron. As CNET reports, Haddy is also working with Disney’s Imagineers on a number of other projects for the company’s theme parks, including closet doors for the new Monsters, Inc. ride at Walt Disney World in Florida, rock structures to increase the fidelity of immersive zones, and even furniture for Disney World hotels.
Haddy also has a strong sustainability ethos and its 3D printing process exclusively uses recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable materials. For Disney, this was an important element in selecting the company for its accelerator program, since its solution can unlock greater resource efficiency. Moreover, any props or structures 3D printed by Haddy can be broken and melted down to 3D print new objects.
“AI-powered industrial 3D printing factory Haddy showcased how technology can quickly transform spaces for attractions and resorts, or mutable backdrops for TV, film, and theater production,” Disney stated. “Haddy’s fabrication approach and technology allows for durable, custom pieces to be fabricated quickly, affordably, and at scale, enabling designers to imagine and re-imagine spaces and experiences more easily.
“Haddy is collaborating with Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development to explore the creation of select props and set pieces for Disney Parks. In connection with its participation in the Disney Accelerator program, Haddy is also exploring new applications for its technology and approaches across the company.”
