Spanish renewable energy and infrastructure company ACCIONA has deployed two 3D printed traffic control and security huts on the Western Harbour Tunnel project in Sydney, Australia.

This marks the company’s first use of 3D printing technology in this type of structure.
The huts are constructed from patterned concrete that is fully recyclable. Unlike conventional buildings, the material can be deconstructed and combined with other materials to form new structures, supporting circular construction principles and reducing waste on site.
Each hut weighs approximately 2.4 tonnes and is mounted on a plinth, allowing relocation as site needs change. Production takes around nine days per hut—a 40% to 50% reduction in build time compared with traditional construction methods. The huts come fully equipped with lighting and power, and total cost is 40% to 50% lower than standard traffic control and security huts.
The two huts are already in use at sites in Sydney, with early feedback reported as positive. The project lead noted significant advantages in delivery speed, cost savings, and sustainability, adding that the huts’ full recyclability aligns closely with the project and the company’s values. ACCIONA is now planning to further promote the use of such structures across the project.
