Protopasta co-founder Alexander Dick says controlling filament production remains central to the company’s approach as desktop 3D printers become more capable and affordable. He discussed the strategy in an interview published by 3Dnatives on October 19, 2026.

The Vancouver, Washington-based manufacturer develops materials and builds its own extrusion equipment. Dick describes that integration as a way to experiment with formulations while maintaining deliberate, consistent chemistry.

He also points to collaborations with makers on custom colors and work with business customers on formulations for specific functional or aesthetic requirements.

The interview presents material availability and consistency as continuing constraints for users operating printer fleets. These observations reflect the company’s perspective; the article does not announce a new product or provide independent comparative testing.
