Since the beginning of this year, sales of 3D printers, related accessories, and filaments on JD.com in China have increased by more than 100% year‑on‑year. The main consumer groups are those born in the 1980s and 1990s.

Surveys show that over 60% of people have been continuously following 3D printing for the past two years, more than 70% have been “planted” (interested and tempted to buy), and over 60% feel that the number of people around them using 3D printing has significantly increased.
Moving from laboratories to homes, 3D printing is becoming a “creation tool.” The main reasons for its breakthrough are lower price barriers (52.9%), maturing technology (51.5%), and reduced operational difficulty (51.0%). Entry‑level machines costing around one thousand yuan (approx. $140 USD) come with automatic leveling and one‑click printing, allowing beginners to get started easily.
Practicality drives consumption: 41.6% of users bought a printer for real‑life needs. Among high‑frequency printing scenarios, “life savers” such as storage boxes and repair parts rank highest (54.2%). Parent‑child education is also very popular, with 37.5% of users purchasing equipment for their children’s technology– and many parents admit they “got hooked first.” Fun (58.4%) and the sense of achievement from creating something (49.4%) are the core drivers of continued enthusiasm.
Application scenarios continue to expand: personalized customization (49.8%), creative gifts (44.3%), desktop accessories (47.2%), and trendy toys/figurines (41.3%) are all popular. The user base has expanded from professional geeks to individual hobbyists and parent‑child families.
Nearly 70% of respondents want to try online 3D printing services, especially full‑process solutions that integrate model repair, printing, sanding, and painting (44.5%). In the future, consumers look forward to lower filament costs, richer free model libraries, the introduction of AI‑based modeling, and more life‑oriented applications such as home modification and wearable DIY.
The true charm of 3D printing is giving ordinary people the ability to “turn ideas into reality.” As barriers continue to fall, it is expected to become as common in households as washing machines – a standard tool for unlocking the joy of creation.
