On May 7, 2026, Anthropic released eight Claude AI connectors that allow users to control design software such as Autodesk Fusion, Blender, and SketchUp using natural language.

For 3D printing, this means engineers can create and iterate models through conversation, automate repetitive design tasks, and coordinate file transfers across production workflows. In the past, a great deal of time was wasted on "handover" work such as manual file moving and format conversion — tasks that the connectors can now automate, freeing engineers to focus on actual geometry creation.

Highlights of the three major tool integrations:

Fusion: Create and modify 3D models through conversation. Geometry creation and design information querying are separated, and both run on open standards.
Blender: Use natural language to call the Python API, automatically build scripts, apply batch object changes, run geometry checks, fix mesh errors, and export print-ready files. Anthropic has funded the Blender project to support continued development of its Python API.
SketchUp: Convert conversational descriptions into initial models that designers can later refine in detail.
The connectors are not a replacement for professional functions such as build preparation, support optimization, machine connection, and quality management. Instead, they work on top of the layer where engineers make decisions, transfer files, and manage production operations.
Anthropic also announced partnerships with the Rhode Island School of Design, Ringling College of Art and Design, and Goldsmiths, University of London. Students and faculty at these institutions will have free access to Claude and the full suite of connectors.
The industry pain point is this: AI has previously focused mostly on isolated technical tasks — for example, Synera integrated Materialise’s Magics SDK to autonomously generate supports. Yet the waste caused by manually coordinating files between different tools has remained largely unresolved. According to the 2026 3D Printing Industry Executive Survey, workflow control is now seen as a more critical competitive advantage than process knowledge. Anthropic’s connectors are filling this gap and accelerating the elimination of manual handovers.
